Preventive Dentistry

When it comes to the health of your teeth and gums, preventative dental care is essential. Dental disease is entirely preventable. Proper dental care with Axiom Dentistry can help to prevent tooth decay, reduce the need for costly dental procedures, and improve your overall health.

The American Dental Association recommends the following steps to maintain good oral health:

  • Brush your teeth two times per day with an ADA approved fluoride toothpaste
  • Replace your toothbrush every three to four months
  • Use floss or an interdental cleaner to clean between teeth daily
  • Eat a balanced diet and avoid soft drinks
  • Visit a dental professional regularly for cleanings and checkups

Regular visits to your dentist can prevent and minimize the need for serious dental treatment such as root canals, periodontal treatments, and tooth replacement. Did you know that poor dental hygiene has been linked to serious illnesses such as strokes, heart disease, premature births, and Alzheimer’s disease? Proper dental care and regular visits to your dentist should be part of your healthy lifestyle.

Axiom Dentistry offers the following preventative procedures:

Oral exams and education– A proper oral exam consists of X-rays (when necessary) and a visual examination by your dental provider. Oral exams are used to address goals and expectations of the patient, identify concerns, and develop a customized treatment plan. During the exam, existing dental treatments as well as any needed treatments will be recorded in your dental file. You will meet with a dental hygienist who will assess the overall health of your gums and the bone surrounding your teeth.

Digital radiography– Dental X-rays are a necessary diagnostic tool that are used to reveal areas of decay and concern that may be hidden between your teeth. These areas are not visible by a visual examination. At Axiom Dentistry, we offer the latest in X-ray technology. Digital X-rays reduce the amount of radiation by more than 80 percent and can be viewed instantly. Digital X-rays provide a better quality image and can be enlarged, cropped, and enhanced for better clarity.

Intra-oral cameras– At Axiom Dentistry, we pride ourselves on offering the latest in technology including intraoral cameras. These dental cameras allow you to see exactly what we see. Images are captured by a tiny video camera and displayed on a television monitor. Intraoral cameras allow you to take an active role in your dental treatment by enabling you to better understand your dental conditions.

Diagnodent Caries Detection System– Diagnodent is a cavity detection system that when combined with an oral and radiographic evaluation provides reliable and accurate caries detection and therefore the earliest possible care. This detection system allows even the smallest lesions to be detected enabling early intervention designed to protect and preserve your healthy smile.

What is a Prophylaxis?

Simply put, prophylaxis is a professional dental cleaning. It is a preventive service designed to prevent gum disease, gingivitis, and periodontal disease keeping the oral cavity in overall good health. During a prophylaxis, your dental hygienist will remove plaque and tartar with specialized instruments. After the cleaning, the hygienist will remove any stains by polishing your teeth.
